18 February 2008 13:15 - 14:45

Meeting
Thirteenth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA 13)

Understanding how to achieve synergies between conservation, agricultural production and livelihoods requires very context specific, place-based knowledge. Many local communities throughout the world have been jointly managing their landscapes for these mutually reinforcing objectives for a many generations. Despite its richness and potential to guide landscape management decisions throughout the world, the long-term knowledge and expertise developed by local communities worldwide is rarely shared, learned from and adapted to be applied elsewhere. This side event will serve as a platform for community leaders participating in SBSTTA to discuss community-led strategies for biodiversity conservation in agricultural landscapes. It will include presentations from CBOs and farmer organizations on their experiences in agricultural biodiversity conservation, in all its forms, and recommendations for how these activities can be enhanced. The event will also be a space for diverse participants attending the SBSTTA, including other CBOs, national government representatives, and NGOs working in conservation and agricultural development to discuss the role of farmers in agricultural biodiversity conservation. Participants will represent groups including Kijabe Environmental Volunteers (KENVO), Kenya; Kalinga Mission for Indigenous Communities and Youth Development (KAMICYDI), Philippines; and Asociacion ANAI/Talamanca Initiative, Costa Rica.
