The side event will illustrate different views on FAO’s work on and support for the establishment, management and monitoring of both terrestrial and marine protected areas. Thematic issues to be illustrated and discussed will cover in situ activities highlighting local actions, with a particular focus on human-wildlife conflicts; coordination and standardization of ecological monitoring, with specific attention to terrestrial and coastal ecosystems; effective management of protected areas and in particular marine protected areas; and an overview of geo-referenced data management in establishment and monitoring of protected areas. Open-floor discussion will address the importance of reconciling in situ and remote sensing activities for supporting terrestrial and marine protected areas.
