Panel Discussion on Liability and Redress Regime for GM Crops: A Developing Country Perspective

Organizer
Gene Campaign, Cecoedecon, FTN Asia

Date and Time
14 May 2008 18:15 - 19:45

Meeting
Fourth meeting of the Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (BS COP MOP 4)

This discussion will focus on the probable elements of a liability and redress regime required in the context of a developing country like India. Despite allowing commercialisation and field trials of GM crops and unrestricted import of GE foods, India is yet to put in place a liablity and redress regime to address any damage, arising from their introduction. A liability and redress regime for India should also take into account that India is a centre of origin for several crops and contamination here could cause irreparable damage.
