This side event is an introduction to the Global Ocean Biodiversity Initiative (GOBI). Speakers will provide illustrations of how this international partnership is advancing the scientific basis for conserving biological diversity in the deep seas and open oceans. The work under this initiative ultimately aims to help countries meet the marine goals adopted under the CBD and at the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development, particularly the establishment of representative marine protected area networks by 2012.
