Sabah’s, Malaysia conservation governance – ecosystem approach in practice

Kinabatangan river basin of Sabah State in Malaysia, the largest river basin of the State having an intact tropical rainforest, Maliau Basin, upstream and Sabah’s first Ramsar site downstream, forms one of the most unique ecosystems of Sabah. Due to the importance of this ecosystem, conservation initiatives such as the Heart of Borneo, Kinabatangan Corridor of Life and Sabah Development Corridor covers the whole river basin. In addition, Sulu-Sulawesi Marine Ecoregion and Coral Triangle Initiative are active in the marine environment, outreach of the Kinabatangan river basin. The Ramsar site was registered in 2008, which was led by the Sabah Biodiversity Centre (SaBC) with the assistance of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The site is located between inland and marine ecosystems, which functions as a driving force of integrating conservation initiatives and stakeholders to practice holistic conservation (ecosystem approach). In our side event, we will present how a variety of conservation activities of different stakeholders are integrated under Sabah’s conservation governance. Our presentation is then to explore how Sabah can contribute to the regional conservation.
