Fifth meeting of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (BS COP MOP 5)

The Japanese government was criticized as a "hostile host" by the civil society at the last biosafety protocol meeting in Bonn. In spite of the fact that the majority of countries called for strong rules to deal with the risks of GMOs, the Japanese Government systematically blocked almost every key issue. At this side event, the Japanese civil society will persent an alternative approach toward biosafety that is based on the Procautionary Principle and the Polluters Pay Principle.
