BY INVITATION ONLY

LOCALE:

THE LEGEND HOTEL
Putra Place, 100 Jalan Putra
Opposite of Putra WTC

This evening will explore options for meeting the marine conservation finance requirements for creating and sustaining MPA networks worldwide with a view to developing actionable recommendations for the relevant COP7 plenary discussions.

Well-managed MPA networks contribute to productive and resilient oceans by slowing the loss of endangered marine species, preventing habitat damage, facilitating recovery from disturbances, restoring stocks of depleted fisheries, and serving to integrate individual protected areas into environments that provide additional socio-economic benefits. The Parties to the CBD have recognized these imperatives in the proposed programme of work on Marine and Coastal Protected Areas. Yet to achieve a comprehensive, effectively managed, and ecologically representative global system of MPA networks, we are pressed to identify a suite of national and international funding instruments to ensure financial sustainability over the long term. Many tools and strategies exist already. Here is a chance to share experiences in creative approaches to develop diverse and locally applicable portfolios of options, and identify a more viable way forward to the 2012 goal.

Dinner will be served.
