Management of Agricultural Biodiversity for Sustainable Development: Towards a Research Agenda

Organizer
Consultative Group on International Agriculture (CGIAR) - System-wide Genetic Resources Programme

Date and Time
10 February 2004 18:30 - 20:0

Meeting
Seventh Ordinary Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 7)
- Agricultural biodiversity can contribute crucial elements that people want from their farming systems and can do so sustainably. Indeed, it will play an essential role in achieving the Millennium Development Goals. As COP V noted (Decision V/5) our understanding of agricultural biodiversity loss and its consequences is severely limited and integrated assessments are particularly lacking. Our understanding of the ways in which diversity could optimally benefit production is even more limited.
- This Side Event provides an opportunity for participants to explore how better to mobilize efforts to provide the knowledge base needed for improved use of agricultural biodiversity. The outputs of a recent meeting organized by the System-wide Genetic Resources Programme of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research will be presented as well as key concerns of agricultural biodiversity workers in different countries and of NGOs working in the field.
- As well as discussing some of the key issues where research is most urgently needed participants will consider: - The importance of improving links between work on different components of production systems (e.g. crops, livestock, fish, pollinators, soil biota etc.) - Continuing initiatives to identify research needs. - Exchange of protocols and procedures and adoption of common approaches. - Exchange of information on resource mobilization and development of joint projects - The benefits of developing and maintaining a “Group” to strengthen research on agricultural biodiversity

Speakers are expected to include: Setijati Sastrapradja, Isabella Masinde (Kenya), Anil Subedi (ITDG), Emile Frison (IPGRI) For further information please visit our website
