Side Event
Building synergies between traditional and scientific knowledge systems – a Multiple Evidence Approach
Organizer
Stockholm Resilience Centre together with the International Indigenous Forum on Biodiversity
Date and Time
10 October 2013 13:15 - 14:45
Traditional knowledge systems are increasingly recognized and brought forward as sources of understanding on ecosystem dynamics and sustainable practices, a potential that often has not informed decision making on ecosystem management beyond the local level. As a follow up on the theme for the In Depth Dialogue “Connecting traditional knowledge systems and science, such as under the IPBES, including gender dimensions", this side event will present the Multiple Evidence Base (MEB) approach that highlights the importance of indigenous and local knowledge systems on their own terms to generate equally valid and useful evidence relevant to the sustainable governance of ecosystems and biodiversity. The Community Based Monitoring and Information Systems (CBMIS) developed under the IIFB is compatible with the MEB approaches. An explorative work with these methods is under development to be used in e.g. Aichi targets TK indicators follow up, as well as for the IPBES.
