In the context of the programme "Sustainable Land Management" funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) international scientific projects are implemented in a wide range of regions of the world. The programme has the intention to provide scientific support to resource users and policy makers in their search for sustainable land management solutions. The projects are implemented in close cooperation between German scientists, scientists of the respective partner countries and regional and local governing bodies and stakeholder organizations. For further information please consult the programme website: http://nachhaltiges-landmanagement.de/en/. In this side event selected projects of the "Sustainable Land Management" programme from China, Germany and Brazil relate their scientific results to several Aichi-2020 targets, in particular to target 5 'halting habitat loss, target 7 'sustainable agricultute/forestry', target 14, the 'safeguarding of essential services, including services related to water' and to target 15, 'the restoration of at least 15% of degraded ecosystems'. After a short introduction to the funding programme results will be presented by the following projects: • SuMaRiO: Sustainable Management of River Oases along the Tarim River / China (http://www.sumario.de/project) • INNOVATE: Interplay among multiple uses of water reservoirs via innovative coupling of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems in Brazil (http://www.innovate.tu-berlin.de) • COMTESS: Sustainable Coastal Land Management: Trade-offs in EcoSystem Services in Germany (http://www.comtess.uni-oldenburg.de/en) The side event will encourage discussions on how science can and should best support the implementation of Aichi targets.
