Seventh Ordinary Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 7)

<br>The CBD Secretariat, the UNESCO World Heritage Centre and UNDP will announce a joint Memorandum of Cooperation for activities to meet the 2010 targets of the CBD Strategic Plan. The signing ceremony will be attended by Executive Secretary of the CBD, the Global Manager of the UNDP/GEF Small Grants Programme, and the Deputy Director of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre. A central aim of the Memorandum will be to link World Heritage sites and networks that each party supports in order to build national and community-based capacity to secure the long term sustainability of protected areas and help meet the biodiversity 2010 target. <br><br> Joint activities will seek to influence policy development related to the role of protected areas in the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. As a unique example of synergy between the aims of the CBD, UNDP and WHC, the Global Manager of the GEF Small Grants Programme will present a pioneering initiative to support a community-based landscape approach towards natural World Heritage sites. Time for discussion will focus on the future expansion of the 'Community Management of Protected Areas Conservation' (COMPACT) programme, supported on a pilot basis by the United Nations Foundation (UNF), in and around additional World Heritage sites worldwide
