Brief introduction to the present Species 2000 and ITIS Catalogue of Life programme, and its recent progress beyond half a million species. Discussion of the Phase 2 programme to complete the Catalogue by 2011, to link globally with regional taxonomic hubs, and to make partnerships at the regional and national level as a key part of the GTI.
