The central strategy of the side event Addressing the link between Conservation and Poverty - Community Conserved Areas (highlighting Extrativist Reserves in Brazil) is to – a) Promote the idea of Community Conserved Areas Globally as an important mechanism to address the link between conservation and poverty reduction and provide opportunity for some analysis of their efficiency in doing so; b) promote an example of this happening in Brazil, the host country of COP 8, to the region and other parts of the world as an important contribution worldwide to implement components of the Program of Work on Protected Areas of the CBD (there is in the region already a lot of interest in replicating this model in other neighboring countries); c) give the opportunity to Brazil and other countries to receive feedback from others on this types of initiatives creating a better technical exchange and better links for supporting them into the future.
