Joke Waller-Hunter, Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC passes away at age 58

With great sadness, the Executive Secretary and staff of the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity offer condolences to the UNFCCC, and to the family and friends of Ms. Joke Waller-Hunter. We will remember her for the passion of her work, for her commitment to addressing the impacts of climate change on biological diversity and for her warmth and attention to the needs of the people with whom she worked. Beginning with her work for the 1992 “Earth Summit” in Rio, and continuing through her tenure as Executive Secretary to the Framework Convention on Climate Change, she has tirelessly contributed to the protection of our planet and has helped to ensure a sustainable future for all. As head of the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, she provided important and enthusiastic support for increased collaboration between the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification and the Convention on Biological Diversity. In all these respects, and in her straightforward manner, she has been an inspiration to us all. She will be greatly missed.
