In May 2007 the world celebrated the 300th anniversary of the birth of Carl Linnaeus, the Swedish scientist considered to be the father of modern taxonomy – the science and system used to uniquely classify all living things.
To mark this tricentennial, the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has launched the first of a series of CBD Linnaeus Lectures highlighting major issues related to biological diversity – and our collective efforts to protect it worldwide.
The inaugural lecture was addressed by Mr. Yvo de Boer, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and by Mr. Peter Bridgewater, Secretary-General of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, at the CBD Secretariat in Montreal, 23 May 2007.
