Further to my notification SCBD/ITS/SK/mac/78199 of 14 November 2011, I am pleased to inform you that the regional capacity building workshop for Southern African countries on Updating National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans will focus specifically on the economics of ecosystems and biodiversity as an important tool for biodiversity mainstreaming, and has been supplemented with one additional day. The workshop will thus run from 27 February to 1 March 2012. You are kindly requested to take this into consideration in your nomination of representatives.

Launched in December 2010 in Argentina on occasion of the XX Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State, the report highlights the importance of biodiversity and ecosystems services for the region’s sustainable development and long- term competitiveness, in order to inform and engage decision makers in Latin America and the Caribbean on the need to maintain, and invest in, biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Invitation to participate in TEEB Survey to identify policy options to reduce the rate of biodiversity loss – by 30 April 2010
You will recall that a series of global studies on “The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity” (TEEB) is currently being prepared under the aegis of the Green Economy Initiative of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). This work was welcomed by the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) at its ninth meeting and Parties were encouraged to contribute. The results of TEEB work, including the “TEEB for Policy Makers” report available from www.teebweb.org, will be presented at the tenth meeting of the COP, in Nagoya, Japan. The CBD Secretariat is a close partner in implementing this important initiative.

Questionnaire on “The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity” (TEEB) global study
The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is a partner in the important global study on “The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity” (TEEB), which is a cooperative effort of researchers from North and South, led by Pavan Sukhdev, supported by the CBD Secretariat and funded by the European Union and several governments. TEEB draws attention to the local and global benefits of biodiversity and to the social and economic costs of biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation. The initiative to prepare this study was welcomed at the CBD ninth Conference of the Parties (COP9) and Parties were encouraged to contribute. The results of the TEEB study will be presented at CBD COP10 next year in Nagoya.
