About CEPA
Understanding CEPA
Communication, Education and Public Awareness (CEPA) is a central pillar of the Convention’s efforts to foster an informed and engaged global society. It reflects the recognition that biodiversity conservation is not only a scientific or policy matter, but also a societal one, requiring awareness, understanding, and active participation at all levels.
As biodiversity science, governance, and policy have evolved in complexity, so too has the need for clear, accessible, and compelling communication. CEPA was developed to respond to this need, providing a structured framework to support outreach, learning, knowledge-sharing, and public engagement across Parties and stakeholders.
Over the years, decisions adopted by the Conference of the Parties have shaped and refined the CEPA programme of work, introducing practical tools, campaigns, and innovative approaches aimed at strengthening global awareness and action.
Among the key instruments supporting the implementation of CEPA is the International Day for Biological Diversity, celebrated annually on 22 May, which serves as a global platform to raise awareness, mobilize action, and highlight the critical role of biodiversity in sustainable development.
