| Description |
When pastoralists are denied access to grazing lands because of the gazetting of protected areas, they can face increased exposure to risk, especially during times of drought or flood. A number of solutions for alleviating conflict between pastoralism and protection have been proposed based on a review of experiences in Niger, Burkina Faso and Benin. |
| Lessons Learned |
(1) ensuring accurate information is available of livestock-wildlife interactions and on the impacts of different grazing densities on fauna, (2) establishing negotiation avenues, and (3) developing a solution based on concepts such as shared land use and buffer zones. |
