Regions Africa
Description When pastoralists are denied access to grazing lands because of the gazetting of protected areas, they can face increased exposure to risk, especially during times of drought or flood. A number of solutions for alleviating conflict between pastoralism and protection have been proposed based on a review of experiences in Niger, Burkina Faso and Benin.
Lessons Learned (1) ensuring accurate information is available of livestock-wildlife interactions and on the impacts of different grazing densities on fauna, (2) establishing negotiation avenues, and (3) developing a solution based on concepts such as shared land use and buffer zones.
