  International Day of Biological Diversity National Celebration, 22 May 2015

  The India Business and Biodiversity Initiative (IBBI), 22 May 2015
Venue: Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre, Chashma Shahi, Srinagar, Kashmir

The national level celebrations of the International Day of Biological Diversity were held in Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir with enthusiastic participation of all stakeholders. Organised by the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Government of India, through the National Biodiversity Authority, in partnership with United Nations Development Programme and others, the event had Mr. Bali Bhagat, Minister for Social Welfare, Forest, Ecology and Environment, Jammu & Kashmir as the Chief Guest, and Mr. Mohammad Iqbal Khandey, Chief Secretary, Jammu & Kashmir as the Special Guest.

Others present on the occasion were Mr. Jaco Cilliers, Country Director, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP); and Mr. R. Mukundan, Chairman, India Business and Biodiversity Initiative, and Managing Director, TATA Chemicals Ltd; Mr. Edgar Endrukaitis, GIZ, the Secretary of NBA, Chairman and Member Secretary of Jammu & Kashmir State Biodiversity Board, business representatives, school children, etc.

During the event, the Biodiversity Finance Initiative (BIOFIN)-India was formally launched with the release of a brochure. For this, a logo was also designed for BIOFION-India. Another brochure announcing the India Biodiversity Awards 2016, the third in the series, was released, along with a release of a publication on good models of biodiversity governance emanating from India Biodiversity Awards 2014. Also released at the event was an India Business and Biodiversity Initiative on best practices on biodiversity management by some companies. Two parallel sessions were also organised—one for business, and one for youth/school children.

  Nature walk with students of Eco-Clubs, 22 May 2015

8:00-13:00 hrs, Asola-Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary, New Delhi

The Indo-German Biodiversity Programme and the Department of Environment & Forests, Govt. of NCT of Delhi planned a half-day event with school and college students at the Asola Wildlife Sanctuary, a verdant green protected area in the southern-most part of Delhi boasts of diverse species of animals, birds, butterflies and natural flora.

More than a hundred students from various schools and colleges participated in the nature walk planned in the park, followed by an interactive session. The students also performed a street play/ nukkad natak and other cultural activities on the theme ‘nature and biodiversity’.

The group discussions and interaction sessions gave the opportunity to students to familiarize themselves with the environment and biodiversity and their linkages with sustainable development. As a part of the event, GIZ also screened films made by the students of Xavier’s Institute of Communication, Mumbai who has been partnering with GIZ on training modules on coastal and marine biodiversity.

On this occasion, a poster and essay writing competition were announced, inviting entries from all schools in Delhi. The event closed with an award ceremony and remarks from the Minister of Environment and Forests, Government of Delhi.

The Uttar Pradesh State Biodiversity Board is celebrating the International Day for Biological Diversity by organizing a 6 day " Biodiversity festival" for school children and a conference on 22 May 2015 in Lucknow.

  Sree Narayana College for Women, 22 May 2015
Students and teachers at Sree Narayana College for Women celebrated IDB through various activities including: a procession, planting trees on campus and holding an awareness class by Dr. Sajeed, in collaboration with the State Forest Department on the medicinal applications of plants.

The celebration will be inaugurated by I. Siddique, Deputy Conservator of Forests and will be presided by Dr. Sherly P Anand, Principal, S N College for Women.


  Odonates - Guardians of Wetlands
ENVIS Centre on Wetland Ecosystems including Inland Wetlands celebrated the International Day for Biological Diversity by releasing a poster entitled Odonates - Guardians of Wetlands.

  Eco Concept Celebration of the International Day for Biological Diversity
Venue : Botanical Garden Gauhati University, Guwahati, Assam, India.

Forty students selected from four different schools from Guwahati visited the Botanical Garden of Gauhati University. The students will initially trek the entire garden. After that a set of 20 riddles were given to them for which there were clues within the garden. These riddles were designed in a way that solving the riddle taught the students a lot about the garden. Following the riddle activity, there was a knowledge sharing session in the university.

  Gujarat Biodiversity Board
The Gujarat Biodiversity Board celebrated the International Day for Biological Diversity by organizing a state-level workshop on May 22, 2015, at Ahmedabad. The participants included Government officials, NGOs, Industries, Researchers, Universities, Banks, Technical Support Groups, Members from BMCs, Students and general public.

The Board is engaged in creating awareness on Biodiversity conservation, sustained utilization and sharing of benefits since its constitution in 2006 by the Government of Gujarat under the provisions of India’s Biological Diversity Act of 2002.

Bhumi Mata (Mother Earth) has blessed Govardhan Eco Village with some diverse floral and avian life that makes Govardhan Eco Village more sacrosanct. Govardhan Eco Village is committed to sustainable development through sustainable use of ecosystem services, biodiversity conservation and social equity.

GEV celebrated the International Day of Biological Diversity by releasing a small video clip comprising of pictures of the flora and fauna on the website and social media page. It is a humble attempt to showcase the Biodiversity at Govardhan Eco Village, and to inspire people across Planet to stay in harmony with Nature and respect all the Creation of Mother Earth.

The GIZ Indo-German Biodiversity Programme jointly organised events on the occasion of International Day for Biological Diversity, with the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC) in Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir with the Department of Environment & Forests in Delhi, and with the Maharashtra Forest Department in Maharashtra.
