Notification 2017-065

Dear Madam/Sir, Pursuant to paragraph 9 (a) of decision XIII/2, the Conference of the Parties to the Convention invited Parties, other Governments, relevant partners, regional agencies, as well as bilateral and multilateral funding agencies, to undertake, in conjunction with the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, a review of experiences on: (i) Protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures, taking into account the work of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and other appropriate expert bodies; (ii) Additional measures to enhance integration of protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures into the wider land- and seascapes; (iii) Mainstreaming of protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures across sectors to contribute, inter alia, to the Sustainable Development Goals and as natural solutions to combat climate change; and (iv) Effective governance models for management of protected areas, including equity, taking into account work being undertaken under Articles 8(j). In paragraph 10 (a) of the same decision, the Conference of the Parties to the Convention, further, requested the Executive Secretary to develop, subject to the availability of financial resources, voluntary guidance on the elements listed in paragraph 9 (a). I would kindly invite your Government or your relevant organization to provide the Secretariat with information related to your experiences, as well as best practices and lessons learned on the above items (i) to (iv), at your earliest convenience, but no later than 30 August 2017, via e-mail to: secretariat@cbd.int. This information will be used to report on progress to the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice at it twenty second meeting, in July 2018, as requested in paragraph 10 (c) of the same decision.
