Submission of Information on Experiences in the Implementation of Marine Spatial Planning

Dear Madam/Sir, The purpose of this notification is to invite Parties, other Governments, indigenous peoples and local communities and relevant organizations and initiatives to submit information on experiences in the implementation of marine spatial planning. In decision XIII/9, the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Convention on Biological Diversity encouraged Parties to apply marine spatial planning in areas within their jurisdiction or enhance existing marine spatial planning initiatives in these areas. Pursuant to a request in the same decision, the Executive Secretary made available for the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA), at its twenty-second meeting, a compilation of submissions on experiences in the implementation of marine spatial planning (CBD/SBSTTA/22/INF/14 (https://www.cbd.int/doc/c/5279/9112/ed33d905faa4727c226269ea/sbstta-22-inf-14-en.pdf)). In decision 14/10, paragraph 5(b), the COP took note of this compilation and requested the Executive Secretary to continue to compile and synthesize information related to experiences in the application of marine spatial planning. Pursuant to the above-mentioned request, Parties, other Governments, indigenous peoples and local communities and relevant organizations and initiatives are kindly invited to provide information related to their experiences in the implementation of marine spatial planning. Submissions may include relevant management plans at sub-national, national, or regional levels, case studies (including specific sectors/uses involved, objectives, tools/approaches used, and outcomes), challenges, success factors, and lessons learned. Submissions may also provide further information on activities/experiences contained in document CBD/SBSTTA/22/INF/14 (https://www.cbd.int/doc/c/5279/9112/ed33d905faa4727c226269ea/sbstta-22-inf-14-en.pdf). The inputs received will be compiled/synthesized and made available for SBSTTA at its twenty-fourth meeting in May 2020. Submissions are requested as soon as possible, but no later than 24 January 2020. Contributions should be addressed to the Executive Secretary and sent via e-mail to secretariat@cbd.int or faxed to +1 514 288 6588. Please accept, Madam/Sir, the assurances of my highest consideration.
