Burundi is located in Central Africa and 90% of its population works in agriculture. Forests, wetlands, savannas, and steppes are among the ecosystems that can be found in this country. Number and Extent of Protected Areas

Burundi has 14 protected areas divided into four categories: national parks, natural reserves, 2 natural monuments and protected landscapes. Together, they comprise a total surface area of 157,700 ha or 5.6% of the country.

The national vision is to ensure that the population is rightly informed of the value of biodiversity and the threats it faces, as well as involved and engaged in its conservation and sustainable use for the well-being of present and future generations. Goal 1: Promote the conservation of biological diversity of ecosystems, habitats and biomes

The National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan provides details on which ecosystems require protection, taking into consideration the representativeness of phytogeographic territories.
