I am pleased to inform you that, with the generous financial support of the Government of Japan, a regional workshop will be held on 6-9 December 2011 in Nairobi, Kenya, in an effort to strengthen capacity for the CBD programmes of work relevant to invasive alien species (IAS). The workshop is organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD), in collaboration with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Convention on Biological Diversity has recognized that there is an urgent need to minimize the spread and impact of invasive alien species (IAS). Article 8(h) of the Convention states: Each Contracting Party shall, as far as possible and as appropriate, prevent the introduction of, control or eradicate those alien species which threaten ecosystems, habitats or species. National strategies on invasive alien species reported in National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) provide a strategic context for this work.

Request for Consultation on International Phytosanitary Measures 2008
At its session in May 2008, the Standards Committee Working Group (SC-7) of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) reviewed and approved seven draft International Phytosanitary Measures (ISPMs) for member consultation (20 June – 30 September 2008). These ISPMs are particularly relevant to the CBD’s programme of work on invasive alien species. National level collaboration between agencies responsible for biodiversity and plant protection.
The International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) is an agreement with 159 Parties which aims to prevent the introduction and spread of any species (plant, animal or other) that directly or indirectly affect plants. The Conference of the Parties, in decisions VI/23 and VI/20 respectfully, acknowledged the contribution of the IPPC to the implementation of Article 8(h) and welcomed collaboration with the IPPC on matters related to biosafety of living modified organisms. The governing bodies of the two Conventions have referred to these common interests and the need for collaboration.
