Report of the "Cities and Biodiversity: Achieving the 2010 Biodiversity Target" meeting, and Curitiba Declaration.

Dear Madam/Sir, At the initiative of the Mayor of Curitiba, H.E. Carlos Alberto Richa, and on the occasion of the first anniversary of the High-Level Segment of the eighth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP-8), a meeting on "Cities and Biodiversity: Achieving the 2010 Biodiversity Target" was held in Curitiba, Brazil, from 26 to 28 March 2007, with the participation of 34 mayors and top city officials. This meeting provided a unique opportunity to review the experience of cities, as well as enhance the engagement of local authorities in issues related to the implementation of the Convention. The participants of the meeting adopted the Curitiba Declaration on Cities and Biodiversity, which reaffirms the urgency to engage local authorities in the implementation of the objectives of the Convention and the achievement of the 2010 Biodiversity Target.
