Notification 2020-041

Preparations to mark the 10-year anniversary of the adoption of the Nagoya Protocol

Dear Madam/Sir, As you may recall, the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization was adopted on 29 October 2010 in Nagoya, Japan, as a supplementary agreement to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) to further advance the third objective of the Convention. The Protocol entered into force on 12 October 2014, marking the achievement of the first element of Aichi Biodiversity Target 16. Since then, many Parties and non-Parties, indigenous peoples and local communities, private sector and research institutions, partners on capacity development and international and non-governmental organizations made great strides towards achieving the second part of the Target to ensure the Protocol’s successful implementation and operationalization. As previously mentioned in Notification 2019-089 (https://www.cbd.int/doc/notifications/2019/ntf-2019-089-abs-en.pdf) issued in October 2019, the Secretariat is planning to undertake a communication and outreach campaign to mark the 10-year anniversary of the adoption of the Protocol, leading up to the organization of a special event on the margins of the fifteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties. In order to support the communication campaign, I would like to invite Parties and non-Parties, indigenous peoples and local communities, private sector and research institutions, partners on capacity development and international and non-governmental organizations to share information with the Secretariat on their access and benefit-sharing cases and success stories in implementing the Protocol, highlighting the contribution of access and benefit-sharing to the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and to the Sustainable Development Goals. New and interesting cases will be selected by the Secretariat to be profiled on the CBD website and shared widely on social media. Kindly send information and success stories by e-mail to secretariat@cbd.int as soon as possible and no later than 15 September 2020. I take this opportunity to congratulate all Parties to the Convention that have already ratified or acceded to the Protocol and urge others to do so during this key year in the life of the Protocol. Thank you for your cooperation and continued support to the Convention and its Nagoya Protocol. Please accept, Madam/Sir, the assurances of my highest consideration.
