Workshop on Feasible Indicators for Reporting on the Effectiveness of Protected Areas and Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs), 1-2 March 2022 (virtual)

Dear Madam/Sir, I am pleased to invite Parties and observers to participate in the Workshop on Feasible Indicators for Reporting on the Effectiveness of Protected Areas and Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs), to be held virtually on 1 2 March 2022. The workshop is being jointly convened by the United Nations Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The importance of monitoring the implementation of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework has been well recognized in the negotiations at SBI 3, SBSTTA 24 and WG2020-3. The draft post-2020 global biodiversity framework includes global goals and targets for biodiversity, and an accompanying monitoring framework. The workshop will build upon the outcomes of two earlier expert workshops organized by UNEP-WCMC and IUCN, held in November and December 2021 and an on-going survey with additional experts. The first expert workshop considered the potential role of remote sensing, while the second expert workshop considered options for monitoring the effectiveness of protected areas and OECMs and identified potential next steps. A report from these expert workshops and the survey results will be made available at the upcoming workshop and will serve as the basis for discussions. The Workshop on Feasible Indicators for Reporting on the Effectiveness of Protected Areas and Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs) aims to increase the understanding of the indicators proposed in the monitoring framework for the post-2020 global biodiversity framework relating to protected areas and OECMs. The workshop will consider available indicators of effectiveness and determine next steps for their further development and refinement to facilitate standardised and efficient reporting by Parties. The workshop will be held virtually and in two sessions to enable participation across time zones.
