Dear Madam/Sir, I am pleased to inform Parties and observers that the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) will be hosting a Side Event on The Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework: Building Back Better and Advancing Implementation of the SDGs, to be held online on the margins of the 2022 High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) on Friday, 15 July 2022, from 13:00 to 14:30 EDT. The theme for the HLPF in 2022 will be “Building back better from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) while advancing the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”. The HLPF will thus take stock of the impacts of COVID-19 on the SDGs and provide political leadership, guidance, and policy recommendations on how to advance the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda during the Decade of Action and Delivery, as part of ensuring sustainable, inclusive, and resilient recovery from the pandemic. The CBD side event will highlight how the implementation of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework can accelerate the realization of the SDGs in an inclusive manner. By underscoring the shared recognition of the urgent need for action on nature, this event will help build political momentum for the successful adoption of an ambitious and transformative framework at the second part of COP 15 in Montreal in December, and to support early implementation of the framework. The side event will be held fully online and will take the form of a moderated fireside chat, inviting participants to exchange views and experiences on the policies, multi-stakeholder actions, and partnerships needed to advance early implementation, as well as ways to integrate biodiversity considerations into the pandemic recovery. They will also underscore the urgent need to invest in the conservation, sustainable use, and restoration of biodiversity to help provide jobs, business opportunities and other benefits.
