Notification 2023-026

Theme of the International Day for Biological Diversity 2023

Dear Madam/Sir, I would like to invite governments, indigenous peoples and local communities, relevant organizations, and individuals to participate in this year’s International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) by, among other activities, organizing and hosting local and virtual celebrations on 22 May 2023. This year’s IDB theme will promote action in support of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework: “From Agreement to Action: Build Back Biodiversity” Although every Biodiversity Day carries with it its own special significance, this year’s global celebrations bring a renewed sense of hope, thanks to the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. To mark this incredible achievement, the theme reflects both the celebratory nature of what was achieved at COP 15, as well as the urgency of what still needs to be done in terms of implementation. Parties and relevant organizations are encouraged to share information regarding their commitments to achieve the targets of the Framework and actions taken to implement them. The IDB hashtags are: #BuildBackBiodiversity; #BiodiversityDay; #KMGBF As per standard practice, the Secretariat is developing a variety of outreach materials, to help celebrate this important day, which will be made available in due course, including the following: • Key messages for the day, including actions that respond to the 23 Targets of the Framework • IDB Logo • IDB Webpage featuring events and information materials and links to partner activities • IDB Trello Board In light of the above, I am pleased to invite Parties and relevant organizations to take this theme into account in their plans for activities to celebrate the International Day for Biological Diversity and to keep the Secretariat informed of their activities so that they may be included in the special pages of the CBD website devoted to these celebrations worldwide. Please accept, Madam/Sir, the assurances of my highest consideration.
