The Biodiversity e-Learning Platform
was established pursuant to the request made to the Executive Secretary by the Conference of the Parties (decision XII/2 B, paragraph 8e
) to promote the use of advanced technologies to further enhance capacity building, technical and scientific cooperation and technology transfer.
It is a customized learning management system designed to facilitate access to a wide range of e-learning opportunities relating to the Convention on Biological Diversity and its Protocols. It was established with funding from the Government of Japan, through the Japan Biodiversity Fund, and is maintained in collaboration with the United Nations System Staff College
The Platform hosts e-learning modules and courses, developed by the Secretariat in collaboration with partner organizations, in the following categories:
- Access and Benefit-sharing: modules on Establishing Legal Frameworks to Implement the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit-Sharing
- Biosafety: modules on Mainstreaming Biosafety; Public Awareness, Education and Participation; Handling, Transport, Packaging and Identification of Living Modified Organisms; the Nagoya-Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress
- Economics, Trade, and Biodiversity: modules on Biodiversity Valuation; Sustainable Consumption and Production
- Protected areas: modules on Network Design; Integration; Management Planning; Participation; Sustainable Finance; Implementation; Monitoring and Adaptive Management
