Resumed session of the extraordinary meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention and the meetings of the Parties to the Cartagena and Nagoya Protocols
Montreal (Online), 25-27 November 2020
UPDATED
An interim budget for the Convention on Biological Diversity for the year 2021 has been adopted.
Between 16-19 November 2020, the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity convened the following meetings, remotely and concurrently:
- The second extraordinary meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity
- The first extraordinary meeting of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety
- The first extraordinary meeting of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit-sharing.
The purpose of holding these extraordinary meetings, and having them virtually, was to consider and approve an interim budget for the Secretariat’s operations in 2021. This became necessary taking into account that:
- The current budget of the Secretariat runs out on 31 December 2020,
- COP 15 has been postponed, and
- there is a pressing need to keep the Secretariat operating, as well as enable Parties to pay their dues in 2021.
The meetings were conducted through a silence/written procedure, which took place after informal consultations.
