Gender and Biodiversity

Decision X/19, requested Parties to enhance efforts to fully implement the Gender Plan of Action in order to mainstream gender considerations in all aspects of the work under the Convention.

The JBF supported the development of a training module on gender mainstreaming in NBSAPs, dedicated gender sessions in NBSAP workshops, and a pilot project to foster gender integration into the NBSAP revision processes of  three countries: Brazil, Mexico and Uganda.

This support increased capacity of developing country Parties to integrate gender considerations into planning and implementing their NSBAPs, and increased understanding of gender and biodiversity linkages and of entry points where gender considerations could be integrated in the implementation of the Convention.

The JBF also enabled the participation of representatives of women’s groups in the consultations for- and the negotiations of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework resulting in a dedicated gender target in the framework, and in the adoption of an updated Gender Plan of Action at COP 15.
