  Awareness Walk, 23 May 2016, Lahore

The University of Veterinary & Animal Sciences is organizing an awareness walk on the occasion of the celebration of the International Day for Biological Diversity (22 May).

The celebration takes place on 23 May 2016 at 9:00am, at C-Block, Ravi Campus, University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Lahore.


  International Symposium: Biodiversity of Pakistan: Prospects and Associated Issues, 22-24 May 2016, Baragali summer campus

The University of Peshawar had celebrated the International Day for Biological Diversity on 22 May 2005. Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Government was the chief guest at that occasion. He provided 83 acres of land for the establishment of a Biodiversity Centre and Botanical Garden, the Federal Government provided required financial support. This garden is situated at a distance of 40 Kilometers from the main campus of the Peshawar University. The University provided all necessary support. Now there are education programs at B.Sc, M. Phil and Ph.D in Biodiversity and Conservation in addition to the Botanical Garden which is the largest in the country and recognized by BGCI.

Again, 22 May falls on Sunday. The Department of Botany of the University of Peshawar has organized a 3-day International Symposium at Baragali summer campus w.e.f. 22-24 May 2016. The theme is Biodiversity of Pakistan: Prospects and Associated Issues. Delegates from USA, Brazil, Turkey, Saudi Arabia are attending in addition to national participants.

The Inaugural Ceremony showcases a video message by the Executive Secretary, Dr. Braulio Ferreira de Souza Dias.


  Celebration of IDB 2016 at Pakistan Museum of Natural History

Pakistan Museum of Natural History, Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF), Ministry of Science & Technology (MoST) in collaboration with Ministry of Climate Change (MoCC), UNESCO- Pakistan, Snow Leopard Foundation (SLF) are going to celebrate IDB 2016. In this regard, following multiple activities are planned:

  • Speech Competition and Art Competition among school children on May 24th (Islamabad and Rawalpindi.

  • Outreach speech competition among schools children's of Chitral and Gilgit on June 5th.

  • Biodiversity and Livelihood Exhibition on June 2nd (where visitor would get aware how biodiversity mainstreaming lead to livelihood.

  • Inquiry based Learning about Biodiversity on June 2nd (Broad array of students from universities, colleges and schools will ask questions from experts.

  • Panel of Experts will have discussion on June 2nd and prepare suggestions and recommendations for government on some thematic areas related to Biodiversity.

  • Prizes and shields will also awarded to winners of Art and Speech competition on June 2nd.

  • Shield of appreciation will also be done in respect of Prof. Dr. Muhammd Ali Nawaz how has been recently awarded with Whitley Award-2016, on June 2nd.

  • Hands on training on the conservation of Biodiversity on June 2nd.

  Seminar: Mainstreaming Biodiversity for Sustaining People and their Livelihoods
The ICIMOD Country Office in Pakistan organized a seminar ‘Mainstreaming Biodiversity for Sustaining People and their Livelihoods’ in collaboration with Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC), Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF), PMAS-Arid Agriculture University, Government of Gilgit Baltistan, Aga Khan Rural Support Programme (AKRSP), World Wildlife Fund for Nature Pakistan (WWF-P), International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Mountain AreasFarmer Support Organization (MAFSO) and local communities at Skardu, Baltistan.
