Invitation for nominations to the Latin American and Caribbean Regional Workshop on the Nagoya – Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, 15 – 16 December 2011 - Lima, Peru

Dear Madam/Sir, I am pleased to inform you that the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity is organizing a regional workshop on the Nagoya – Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress for Latin America and the Caribbean. The workshop will be held in Lima, Peru from 15 to 16 December 2011. The main purpose of the workshop is to raise awareness and understanding about the Nagoya – Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol and to identify needs and requirements by Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety with a view to expedite the early entry into force and implementation of the Supplementary Protocol. The workshop is also intended to provide an opportunity for participants to consider issues related to the implementation of other decisions of the fifth meeting of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (COP-MOP 5) in particular, the decisions on the second national reports, and the strategic plan - decisions BS-V/14 and BS-V/16 of COP-MOP 5, respectively. Accordingly, we kindly invite Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety from the Latin American and Caribbean region to nominate one representative to participate in the workshop. In order to enable the Secretariat to finalize arrangements for the workshop in a timely manner, we request to send us your nomination as soon as possible but no later than 24 November 2011. Subject to the availability of funds, the Secretariat will cover the cost of participation of ONE official nominee from each eligible Party to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety. This will include economy class ticket to the workshop and daily subsistence allowances (DSA) for the duration of the workshop. The nomination must be submitted through an official letter addressed to the Executive Secretary of the Secretariat. The letter may be sent by fax to +1 514 288 6588, or by email as a scanned attachment to: secretariat@cbd.int. The documents for the workshop, including the provisional and annotated agenda and the “Information Note for Participants” will be made available in due course on the Secretariat’s website at: http://www.cbd.int/doc/?meeting=BSLRRW-LAC-01.
