Survey by the World Conservation Monitoring Centre of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP-WCMC) and the Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP) to review the incorporation of biodiversity and ecosystem service values into National Biodiversity Strategies and Actions Plans (NBSAPs)

Dear Madam/Sir, I am pleased to inform you that the World Conservation Monitoring Centre of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP-WCMC) and the Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP), with financial support from the United Kingdom’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), are currently carrying out a project to identify good practice and lessons learnt from incorporating Aichi target 2 into revised and updated national biodiversity strategies and actions plans (NBSAPs). You may recall that the Conference of the Parties at its tenth meeting, in adopting the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020, urged Parties and governments to develop national targets, using the Strategic Plan and its Aichi Targets, as a flexible framework, in accordance with national priorities and capacities, and to as appropriate update and revise, their national biodiversity strategies and action plans, in line with the Strategic Plan. In order to support this work, the study will specifically review the different approaches and reasons for integrating biodiversity values as reflected in revised NBSAPs, considering the full of range of types of value, including both monetary and non-monetary values. To this end, a brief survey to review national approaches has been prepared. The results of the survey will be used to produce a report on pertinent good practices as well as lessons learnt, and hence support the implementation of Aichi targets 1 and 2 of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020. I wish to encourage you to participate in the survey. The questionnaire should take 20 minutes to complete and the closing date is 23 April 2012. Please contact Ms. Hollie Booth, UNEP-WCMC (hollie.booth@unep-wcmc.org) to request access to the survey, specifying whether you would like to participate in English, French or Spanish. Please accept, Madam/Sir, the assurances of my highest consideration.
