I refer to the second meeting of the Working Group on the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, originally scheduled for 24-29 February 2020, in Kunming, Yunnan Province, China.
Due to the ongoing situation following the outbreak of the novel coronavirus 2019, the Secretariat, in consultation with the Government of the People’s Republic of China, the COP Presidency and the Working Group Co-Chairs, has decided that the second meeting of the Working Group will take place in Rome, Italy at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) on the same dates.
The Secretariat recognizes the enormous efforts being taken by the Government of the People’s Republic of China to control the outbreak and the need to avoid any disruption of these efforts. We also very much appreciate the substantial efforts that the Government of China through the Ministry of Environment and Ecology as well as the Yunnan Province and the City of Kunming has taken to make this meeting a success.
The Thematic Consultation on Transparent Implementation, Monitoring, Reporting and Review for the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework and the Thematic Consultation on Capacity-Building and Technical and Scientific Cooperation for the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, will also take place on 20-22 February 2020 and 1-2 March 2020, respectively, as previously scheduled.
Parties, other Governments and observers who have already registered for the meetings do not need to re-register. Further information, including logistical implications of the change in venue and visa procedure, will be provided in an updated Information Note for Participants.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. QU Dongyu, Director General of FAO for the kind offer and prompt arrangements made.
The Secretariat and the Government of the People’s Republic of China regret the inconvenience caused by this change and are committed to ensuring that the development of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework and other preparations for the fifteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties proceed in a timely and effective manner.
Please accept, Madam/Sir, the assurances of my highest consideration.
Elizabeth Maruma Mrema
Acting Executive Secretary
