Notification 2022-074

Invitation to a Biodiversity Science Workshop, 6 December 2022 - Montreal, Canada

Dear Madam/Sir, The Conference of the Parties has emphasized that the post-2020 global biodiversity framework be guided by the best available science and evidence from relevant knowledge systems, including the natural and social sciences, local, traditional and indigenous knowledge, and citizen science (decision 14/34, annex). Moreover, the Conference of the Parties has identified the reports from the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) as key sources of information for the development of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework, and invited the scientific community to actively engage and contribute to the process of developing the framework. In this context, the Secretariats of IPBES, GEO-BON and the Convention on Biological Diversity are organizing a one-day biodiversity science workshop to engage Parties and observers in an interactive dialogue on science and monitoring for the post-2020 global biodiversity framework. The workshop is being held on 6 December 2022 at the venue of the UN Biodiversity Conference, (Palais des Congrès de Montréal). Participation in the workshop is open to all registered delegates to the fifth meeting of the Open-ended Working Group and the fifteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties and concurrent meetings of the Parties to the Cartagena and Nagoya Protocols. No additional pre-registration is required. The workshop will be conducted in English. Further details on the workshop, including its tentative agenda, will be available soon at the following webpage: https://www.cbd.int/conferences/2021-2022/associated-events . The UN Biodiversity Conference provides opportunities for Parties and observers to convene and engage in a wide range of summits, forums, fairs, pavilions and side-events that enrich the formal discussions of the meetings. These events host a range of thematic discussions related to biodiversity, across different networks and constituencies, allowing participants to share knowledge, explore collaborations, and build capacity to address the biodiversity crisis. Information on these events is available at the webpage noted above. Please accept, Madam/Sir, the assurances of my highest consideration.
