Selected experts for the ad hoc technical expert group on the new programme of work and institutional arrangements on Article 8(j) and other provisions of the Convention related to indigenous peoples and local communities

Dear Madam/Sir, At its fifteenth meeting, the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity adopted decision 15/10 on the development of a new programme of work and institutional arrangements on Article 8(j) and other provisions of the Convention related to indigenous peoples and local communities. In the same decision, the Conference of the Parties also decided to establish an ad hoc technical expert group to further elaborate possible elements, tasks and actors of a new programme of work, and institutional arrangements and their modus operandi. The recommendations of the expert group will be considered by the twelfth meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Article 8(j) and Related Provisions. The terms of reference of the expert group are contained in annex III of decision 15/10. Pursuant to this decision, the Executive Secretary, through notification 2023-019, invited Parties, indigenous peoples and local communities and relevant organizations to submit the name of one or more expert(s) who could be considered to participate in the AHTEG. In response to this invitation, 67 nominations were received: 25 experts were nominated by 20 Parties, 27 experts were nominated by 27 indigenous peoples and local community organizations, and 15 experts were nominated by 12 observer organizations. The list of selected experts of the AHTEG, including 13 from Parties, 14 from indigenous peoples and local communities, and 6 from relevant organizations, was prepared in consultation with the Bureau of the Conference of the Parties. This list takes into account all the considerations as described in the above-noted notification 2023-019, including relevant expertise and with due regard to geographical and gender balance. Thanks to the generous support of the Governments of Brazil and the United Kingdom, the Secretariat is pleased to announce that the AHTEG will take place in Manaus, Brazil, from 11 to 13 July 2023, to be preceded by a field trip to indigenous lands organized by the Government of Brazil from 8 to 10 July 2023. The Secretariat will be contacting the selected experts directly for logistical arrangements. Please accept, Madam/Sir, the assurances of my highest consideration.
