Dear Madam/Sir, The elections to replace ten outgoing members of the Compliance Committee under the Cartagena Protocol and five members of the Compliance Committee under the Nagoya Protocol, as well as the two observers from indigenous peoples and local communities, were planned to have taken place during the tenth and the fourth meeting of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Protocols, respectively. However, the meetings held in December 2022 were suspended before the elections could take place. To enable the Compliance Committees to continue their important work over the intersessional period, the Bureau, at its meeting held in May 2023 in Kunming, China, agreed, subject to endorsement, at a later date, by the respective meetings of the Parties to the Protocols, to extend the terms of the members concerned, until 31 December 2024. In the case of the Compliance Committee under the Cartagena Protocol, two members from the Asia-Pacific region and one from the Eastern Europe region indicated they would be unable to continue to serve on the Committee. Consequently, the Bureau has appointed replacements for these three members, in accordance with Rule 10, paragraph 2 of the Committee’s rules of procedure (decision BS-II/1, annex).
