Notification 2024-026

Protected Planet Report 2024: Call for submission of data to inform the preparation of the report on progress toward Target 3 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework

Dear Sir or Madam,

In line with COP decisions 10/31 and 14/8, and to facilitate a comprehensive compilation of information on progress towards achieving Target 3 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, I would like to invite Parties  to regularly provide updated data and information to both the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA) and the World Database on Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures (WD-OECM).

Later in 2024, the UN Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) will publish the Protected Planet Report 2024. The report will assess progress on Target 3 using headline, component and complementary indicators in line with decision 15/5. It will be based on data in the Protected Planet Initiative databases, including the information provided by Parties to the WDPA and the WD-OECM.

To ensure the report reflects accurate, up-to-date national data, I encourage you to provide any updated data on protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs) in your country as early as possible but no later than 1 June 2024

This request follows an e-mail notification you have recently received from UNEP-WCMC, which included guidance on how to provide data. For provision of data updates and any queries, please contact UNEP-WCMC directly at  protectedareas@unep-wcmc.org .

I thank you for your cooperation and your continued support to the work of the Convention. I look forward to ensuring that the latest data from all Parties are accurately reflected in this important progress report on Target 3.

Please accept, Sir, Madam, the assurances of my highest consideration.

 (Signed) David Cooper
