In Memoriam - Marie Aminata Khan

A Wonderful Life Cut Short

We are profoundly saddened to announce the untimely death of our very dear friend and colleague, Ms. Marie Aminata Khan, who passed away in Johannesburg on 12th December 2011 at the age of 47 years. Marie spent over 17 years of her professional career working with the United Nations, notably with UN-HQ in New York, UNDP/GEF Small Grants Programme, New York and, since 2006, UNEP-SCBD in Montreal, Canada. Most recently, Marie served as Programme Officer for Gender at the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, United Nations Environment Programme, where she pioneered the recently adopted CBD programme of work on gender. In this capacity Marie worked closely with the UN Conventions on Climate Change and Desertification and the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

Marie will be remembered as a highly competent and dedicated colleague, as well as a very caring, lively and good-natured friend. She will be sorely missed.

Arrangements have been made by her family for Marie to be buried at Long Island, New York, beside her late mother, on 18 December 2011. She is survived by her two sons, Frederic and Charles, her father, step-mother, brothers and sisters.

A dedicated email address remembrance@cbd.int has been set up to transmit messages of condolence to Marie’s family.
