Biodiversity Day is your day and everyone's day

An invitation from the Executive Secretary to join the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) 2026 campaign

"22 May is the International Day for Biological Diversity. This day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly to commemorate the adoption of the Convention on Biological Diversity — the CBD — on 22 May 1992. It is a universal celebration of the vital importance of biodiversity — the foundation of all life on Earth.

This year’s theme is: “Acting locally for global impact.” We invite you to join the global celebration by taking and highlighting local actions that support the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework — the KMGBF.

The KMGBF, adopted by the Convention’s 196 Parties, is the world’s blueprint to halt and reverse biodiversity loss. Its successful implementation depends on action at all levels - global, regional, local efforts — including the actions that you and your community take, wherever you are in the world. These actions can take many forms: conserving nature and protecting pollinators, enhancing soil biodiversity through community gardening, curbing the use of pesticides, making sustainable consumption choices, or promoting biodiversity education around you. The list of possible local actions is long. But every local action matters. And every action is worth celebrating.
Because together, we can make a difference.

Let me be clear: governments — which adopted the KMGBF — are in the driver’s seat for its implementation. But governments cannot do it alone. This must also be an effort of all of us: citizens, businesses, civil society organizations. From schools to boardrooms, we need you to be part of it.

To support your participation in this year’s celebration of biodiversity, we have created a communication toolkit that everyone can use. You can find it on our IDB website.

We invite you to join the campaign online or by organizing events around you. Your celebrations will help build momentum for the 2026 UN Biodiversity Conference that will take place in October in Armenia with the aim of stepping up and accelerating action.

Remember that the International Day for Biological Diversity is your day— and everyone’s day. From us at the Secretariat of the CBD, Happy Biodiversity Day, everyone!"
