Informal Dialogue on a new programme of work and institutional arrangements on Article 8(j) and other provisions of the Convention related to indigenous peoples and local communities

At the initiative of the governments of Canada and the Democratic Republic of Congo, together with the International Indigenous Forum on Biodiversity, an informal dialogue to discuss the key outcomes of the twelfth meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Intersessional Working Group on Article 8(j) and Related Provisions (WG8J-12), is being convened on 25 May 2024, from 10:00 to 16:30 in Nairobi, Kenya, at the margins of the fourth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Implementation (SBI 4), at the United Nations office in Nairobi, Kenya.

This event aims to facilitate dialogue and enhance understanding among Parties, indigenous peoples and local communities and relevant stakeholders on elements and tasks of the proposed new programme of work on Article 8(j) and other provisions. and options for corresponding institutional arrangements. 

Participants

The dialogue is open to all participants registered to attend SBI 4. If you wish to participate, please kindly confirm you participation with the Secretariat via the form found at: https://forms.office.com/r/kNt5WPcdmd. We kindly ask you to confirm your participation no later than 15 May 2024 to allow enough time for necessary logistics and venue preparation. Please note that the registration counter will be closed on 25 May, therefore participants must already have a badge issued to them to access the premises. Also, due to the technical configuration of the room, remote or virtual participation will not be possible.

Interpretation

Informal interpretation in English, Spanish and French will made available through a zoom link. In order to access interpretation, participants need to log into the zoom meeting through their personal laptop or phone, using their personal set of earphones. No extra earphones will be provided.

Theme 1, 2, and 3 will be co-facilitated by Ms. Matilda Wilhelm and Ms. Lucy Mulenkei, former co-chairs of the contact group assigned to address this issue during the last session of the Working Group on Article 8(j) and Related Provisions. Additionally, the Secretariat has been invited to provide a brief introduction to each theme.  Two coffee breaks are scheduled, one in the morning and another in the afternoon.
