CELEBRATION OF THE INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITY, OSLO, NORWAY

The Norwegian Biodiversity Network (SABIMA) is a democratic umbrella NGO working to strengthen protection of biodiversity in Norway. Ten Norwegian biological societies are members of SABIMA. With more than 18,500 members, they embrace both professionals and most skilled amateur biologists in Norway.

SABIMA has celebrated the International Day for Biological Diversity (22 May) every year since 2001. This year, the event was arranged Tuesday 19 May in the Botanical Garden of The National History Museum at the University of Oslo. Researchers and other professional biologists demonstrated a wide spectrum of the Norwegian biodiversity, with special focus on the threat from invasive alien species.

The Norwegian Minister of Environment, Mr. Erik Solheim, gave a speech and a special “Biodiversity Award” to an activist who has worked extensively to protect a threatened butterfly in Norway.
