  Ministry of Environment & Forests, 22 May 2013, New Delhi
The Ministry of Environment & Forests, in collaboration with WWF-India and Wetlands International, organized the national celebrations of the International Day for Biological Diversity 2013. The event was presided by Dr. V. Rajagopalan, Secretary (Environment & Forests)/Vice Minister, Government of India. Various stakeholders from over 30 organisations participated with enthusiasm, representing the concerned Central sectorial Ministries and their agencies, State Government agencies, Universities/research organizations, national and international NGOs, UN agencies, international organizations and industry.

Several federal State Governments (e.g., Uttar Pradesh, Manipur, Andhra Pradesh etc.), and various organizations (e.g., Arid Forest Research Institute) were also present at the celebration and celebrated the International Day for Biological Diversity in a befitting manner.

Mr. Hem Pande, Additional Secretary Ministry of Environment and Forests, discussed the International Day for Biological Diversity on AIR FM Rainbow Delhi FM 102.6 radio station.

The Government of National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi organized a workshop on water and biodiversity for eco-club students and teachers in New Delhi.


  National Biodiversity Authority, Chennai
The National Biodiversity Authority celebrates the International Day for Biological Diversity on the theme of “Water and Biodiversity” on 22 May 2013 at 10.30am at our campus. On this very special occasion, we are launching a Publication “Watering Biodiversity and Ecosystem Management” by Dr. Balakrishna Pisupati, Chairman of the National Biodiversity Authority. The book is released by Prof. M.S. Swaminathan, Founder, Chairman & Chief Mentor, MSSRF.

  Arid Forest Research Institute (AFRI), Jodhpur
The Arid Forest Research Institute celebrates the International Day for Biological Diversity 2013 by raising awareness on biodiversity. The Institute is organizing a small lecture, a plantation of few seedlings and plans to organize a painting competition for children on the theme of Water and Biodiversity.   Manipur Biodiversity Board, Iroishemba
The Manipur Biodiversity Board celebrates the International day for Biological Diversity on 22 May 2013 at the State level and at BMC level with the main function to be held at Manipur Zoological Garden, Iroishemba.

On 13 May, a drawing/painting competition is held at Manipur Forest Training School, Luwangsangbam as a part of the celebration. Prize winners of the competition will be awarded during the celebration programme on 22 May.

  Ignore biodiversity management at your own peril
The United Nations designated May 22 as the “International Day for Biological Diversity,” to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. “Water and Biodiversity” is this year’s theme. We cannot imagine one without the other. Water and biodiversity are sources of life and livelihood or options for reducing poverty and enhancing human welfare. Basic human needs such as air, water, food, clothing and medicines are the products of water/biodiversity.
