Key Objectives of the Peace and Biodiversity Dialogue Initiative

The Peace and Biodiversity Dialogue Initiative (PBDI) aims to promote and strengthen transboundary cooperation as a means to advance biodiversity conservation and peacebuilding. Recognizing transboundary cooperation as an instrument for fostering dialogue, building trust, and strengthening international relations, the PBDI works to enhance ecological connectivity, support collaborative management and governance, and strengthen partnerships. These objectives are closely aligned with Target 3 of the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and contribute to the broader objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity.

The infographic below outlines the key actions through which the PBDI advances its objectives for transboundary cooperation.

Modus Operandi

To achieve these objectives, the PBDI works through three interconnected focal areas

Focal Areas

  • Awareness & Promotion: Highlighting the visibility of transboundary cooperation as a key pathway to achieving Target 3, and as a powerful instrument for strengthening relations between countries. Efforts focus on promoting the establishment and strengthening of regional networks, transboundary conservation areas (TBCAs), and collaboration between neighbouring protected areas across national boundaries
  • Information & Capacity Building: Fostering collaboration, peer-to-peer learning, and the sharing of lessons and good practices among practitioners and stakeholders. The PBDI works to develop partnerships that address information and capacity gaps, and enhance opportunities for effective transboundary conservation.
  • Funding & Support: Providing expertise and seed funding—through the PBDI and its partners—to advance projects that strengthen transboundary cooperation, enhance biodiversity conservation, and contribute to peacebuilding objectives.
