Women4Biodiverisity (W4B) in collaboration with the Secretariat of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is co-hosting a side event A Win-Win for Gender and Biodiversity: Transforming Women’s Rights and Gender Equality for Achieving the Goals and Targets of Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. The side event is scheduled to take place at the GEF 7th Assembly on Wednesday, 23 August, from 13.00 to 15.00 hours at CBD Room 301 in Vancouver Convention Centre, Canada.

Other co-conveners of the side event are The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), World Wildlife Fund (WWF) International, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and Indigenous Information Network (IIN). This side event will convene women leaders, advocates, and organizers from diverse backgrounds and organizations to offer insights and strategies concerning gender-responsive indicators, reporting, and funding. The discussion will prompt participants to rethink humanity's relationship with nature by exploring the roles of women's rights, gender equality, and broader human rights in achieving biodiversity goals by 2030.

The ultimate goal is to support an all-encompassing, transformative, and rights-driven Framework.

Discussion

The discussion will prompt participants to rethink humanity's relationship with nature by exploring the roles of women's rights, gender equality, and broader human rights in achieving biodiversity goals by 2030.

In December 2022, during the CBD COP15, the Convention on Biological Diversity's Parties adopted an influential Post2020 Gender Plan of Action. This plan seeks to promote gender-responsive implementation of the Framework, the first Rio Convention to incorporate a dedicated Gender Equality target. This Framework underscores the necessity of gender equality and women's empowerment for successful execution, illustrated by specific targets like 22 and 23. Target 22 highlights information access for indigenous peoples, local communities, women, and girls, while Target 23 ensures their equal opportunity to contribute, acknowledging their rights, access to resources, and participation.

Focus of the event

  • Facilitate gender-responsive implementation of the Framework and funding support to operationalize the Gender Plan of Action.
  • Increase awareness of the linkages between human rights, gender equality and biodiversity and how these could be supported for an effective and inclusive implementation of the Framework.
  • Identify possible gender-sensitive indicators to operationalise the biodiversity framework.
  • Explore pathways for a transformative global and national biodiversity agendas through sharing of experiences, knowledge and lived experiences.
