IDB 2026: Acting Locally for Global Impact iNaturalist Project
Observe local species May 15–31 for International Day for Biological Diversity! Join the iNaturalist project so your observations count. Together, we create a global snapshot of life on Earth.
The theme of IDB 2026 is \"Acting locally for global impact.\" This project is our iNaturalist contribution to that vision. When you document the plants, fungi, animals, and other species in your backyard, neighborhood, or local wild places, you're not just sharing something beautiful: you're contributing to a living record of global biodiversity.
How to participate:
- Join the project (required for your observations to be included)
- Observe any wild species in your area between May 15–31, using iNaturalist
- Focus on what's around you: quality and local knowledge matter more than quantity
Every observation adds to a collective dataset used by scientists and conservationists around the world.

International Day for Biodiversity Microsite
This year, the celebration of the International Day for Biodiversity (IDB) carries the theme Acting locally for global impact, to highlight that for global goals to be achieved, collective local initiatives are needed.
The ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity joins in the celebration by helping spread awareness of the various IDB-related events organised by different individuals or groups designed to promote appreciation for biodiversity and conservation of the natural treasures around us.
The IDB microsite showcases the the impressive and innovative activities of ASEAN citizens of various ages, showing how acting locally for ASEAN biodiversity is done.
The microsite is also the ultimate roadmap to the official IDB 2026 events and activities happening all over the ASEAN region.

“Western Region Biodiversity Forum” in Uvs Province on May 21-22, 2026.
WESTERN REGION BIODIVERSITY FORUM OPENS IN UVS PROVINCE
The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, with support from UNDP, has launched the “Western Region Biodiversity Forum” in Uvs Province on May 21, 2026, marking the International Day for Biological Diversity under the theme “From Local Action to Global Impact.”
The two-day forum brings together representatives from five western provinces to discuss biodiversity conservation, environmental policy and legal reforms, sustainable natural resource use, genetic resource regulation, soil protection, desertification prevention, and ecological restoration.
The forum also includes training and discussions to strengthen the capacity of local officials in environmental governance and planning.

Reversing the Red: Acting locally for global impact
Join Reverse the Red and some of our Accelerator Award winners from 2025!
This is a celebratory session, designed to showcase the actions happening throughout the network to halt and reverse biodiversity loss. Photo With A Story Contest - Agrobiodiversity as Roots of Resilience
This global Photo With A Story Contest is an initiative of the Agrobiodiversity Index team at the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT and glocolearning, and developed in collaboration with the Agroecology Coalition, Act4Food, The Netherlands Food Partnership, The Nature Conservancy, Wageningen University & Research, Dan Saladino, the Indigenous Peoples' Food Systems Coalition and The Great Full.
Winning stories will receive awards and are planned to be exhibited during international events.
This contest is open worldwide to photographers of all levels, including farmers, policy-makers, students, researchers, cooks, community members, and storytellers. Both amateur and professional contributors are welcome.
This year’s theme is “Agrobiodiversity as roots of resilience in a changing world and geopolitical turmoil”. We are looking for stories that show how agrobiodiversity contributes to building resilience in food systems, landscapes, communities, and cultures.

One Shot for Biodiversity
In celebration of the IBD on 22 May 2026 and ahead to CBD COP17, WWF Armenia proposes the implementation of the nationwide campaign:
“One Shot for Biodiversity”
The campaign is designed as an inclusive national initiative open to all sectors of society to strengthen active citizen engagement and public awareness.
WWF Armenia will launch the campaign through different communication channels and social media platforms, encouraging participants across Armenia to share:
✅ One original photo related to biodiversity, ecosystems, or human–nature connection;
✅ One short biodiversity message or slogan;
✅ Official campaign hashtags;
✅ Tags of WWF Armenia official social media pages.

Support for the Implementation of the Escazu Agreement, the Aarhus Convention and the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety: Access to Information, Public Participation and Access to Justice
To celebrate the IDB, three joint UN agreements organized this side event to highlight key needs and recent developments under the Escazú Agreement, the Aarhus Convention and the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, as identified by treaties’ Parties and stakeholders, including from the private sector and non-governmental organizations. These included:
• Raising awareness of the benefits and implementation of the three agreements related to awareness, access to information, public participation and access to justices;
• Identifying capacity-building needs; and
• Showcasing best practices and opportunities regarding.
Parties to all the instruments benefited from the shared experiences to support establishment and/or strengthening national systems that promote awareness, access to information, public participation, and access to justice.

Campus Biodiversity Day “BioBlitz”
On the occasion of the International Day for Biological Diversity, LINERC at University of Rajshahi launched “BioBlitz,” a biodiversity documentation app aimed at creating a comprehensive database of flora and fauna on the university campus. Nearly 90 student volunteers participated in the May 20 field survey, collecting photographs and ecological data from different areas of the campus and uploading them directly to the app.
The initiative combines citizen science, environmental research, and technology-driven conservation. Speakers at the seminar emphasized the importance of biodiversity conservation, scientific documentation, and youth participation in environmental protection.
LINERC President Md. Abdul Bari highlighted future plans for the app, including AI-based species identification, interactive biodiversity maps, research dashboards, and an open-access biodiversity database.

Haor Biodiversity and Community Resilience Festival 2026.
The “Haor Biodiversity and Community Resilience Festival 2026” is a community event organized by Action Research Foundation to mark the International Day for Biodiversity in the Haor region of Bangladesh.
It brings together local communities, youth, farmers, fishermen, and women leaders to raise awareness about wetland conservation, native fish, migratory birds, and climate resilience. Through discussions, cultural activities, workshops, and traditional knowledge sharing, the festival promotes sustainable livelihoods and community-led environmental protection under the message: “Protect Haor, Protect Life.”

Global Day of Action 2026: Youth for Climate, Biodiversity & Environmental Resilience
Humanitarian Enhancement Aid for Resilient Transformation-HEART, in collaboration with youth volunteers, local communities, and environmental advocates, is organizing the “Global Day of Action 2026: Youth for Climate, Biodiversity & Environmental Resilience” in observance of the International Day for Biological Diversity 2026 and World Environment Day.
This event will focus on biodiversity conservation, climate action, desertification awareness, ecosystem restoration, and youth-led environmental resilience initiatives. 2026 Biodiversity Art Exhibition - Acting Locally for Global Impact
The Biodiversity Art Exhibition is an awareness-raising activity about biodiversity matters through unconventional means. It began in 2021 as a virtual exhibit, during the global pandemic and was a way to reach audiences widely and both highlight and support our talented local artists during those challenging times.
From then and every year since, pieces are chosen that best reflect the theme of International Biodiversity Day of that year. Like biodiversity, visual art expressions are varied and those showcased includes painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, mixed media and more. We can see a snapshot of a moment through the artists' eyes.
Along with the virtual exhibition, there will be an in-person exhibition, for the 2nd year running, that will be held at the Norman Centre in Bridgetown, St. Michael. It will be launched on IDB and last throughout the month of June which is celebrated nationally as Environment Month. Opening hours: 9am-5pm on Mondays-Saturdays.

Inception of the Biodiversity Youth Council
The official launch of the Belize Biodiversity Youth Council on May 22, 2026, in observance of the International Day for Biological Diversity, marks an important milestone in Belize’s commitment to youth engagement in biodiversity conservation.
Established under the National Biodiversity Office, the Council creates a platform for young people to meaningfully contribute to national biodiversity priorities while strengthening leadership, knowledge, and advocacy skills. The launch introduced its inaugural members as emerging champions for biodiversity and highlighted the importance of intergenerational collaboration and capacity building in shaping Belize’s environmental future.
More than a symbolic milestone, the Council represents an investment in the next generation of biodiversity leaders—empowering youth to learn, lead, and help shape a more sustainable and resilient Belize.

BIODIVERSITE EN IMAGES: Avec iNaturalist, capture une image, reçois un nom scientifique et contribue à la conservation de la biodiversité
C'est une activité qui se tiendra sur le campus universitaire d'Abomey-Calavi (Bénin) ce 23 mai 2026 de 08H à 13H. Elle réunira plus de 15O étudiants, jeunes chercheurs et passionnés de la biodiversité. Les participants seront d'abord formés sur l'utilisation de iNaturalist avant de faire une balade photo pour la prise d'images de la biodiversité du campus via l'application. Les espèces dont les images ont été prises seront identifiées de façon participative. Ceci permettra aux participants de mieux connaître la biodiversité du campus et contribuer ainsi à sa conservation. Ce sera aussi pour eux l’occasion de s’imprégner des acquis et perspectives du Projet MoCaBio-UAC qui vise à mobiliser, publier des données et renforcer les capacités des étudiants et jeunes chercheurs du campus universitaire d’Abomey-Calavi sur la biodiversité de ce haut lieu du savoir.

International Workshop on Risk Accounting and Community Resilience in Climate-Sensitive Agrarian Socioecologies of the Hindu Kush Himalayas
This International Workshop on Risk Accounting and Community Resilience in Thimphu addresses climate-driven Loss & Damage to biodiversity and agrarian systems in the Hindu Kush Himalayas. The Hindu Kush Himalayas have lost nearly 70% of their biodiversity over the last century; glaciers are retreating 65% faster than two decades ago. The workshop presents field evidence from India, Nepal, and Bhutan, promotes cold-tolerant rice varieties (YusirayMaap, YusirayKaap 3, Chandanath 1), and restores agrobiodiversity through local landraces. The session moves Loss & Damage estimation from concept to evidence.

The "Integrating Outdoor and Indoor Plants for Sustainable Living" campaign is an educational initiative designed to promote the value of incorporating plants into homes, offices, schools, and urban spaces to foster eco-living and build biodiverse urban environments. This project led by Savatey Ang and co-led by Chanvichana Yee, SD11's Leaders of Young Cities and Communities Leaders Program.
The campaign features 22 posters highlighting 22 different plant species that are both locally popular and easy to grow. The initiative was inspired by a research study tour of Koh Sdach island, where participants explored native and local flora to advocate for nature-based solutions.
Aiming for a nationwide impact across Cambodia via digital platforms, the program targets 2,000 social media engagements and over 100,000 total reaches. Additionally, the campaign will be officially exhibited at the Young Cities and Communities Leaders Conference in October 2026.

Biodiverse Urbanism Expedition: Phnom Penh Edition
Two young Cambodian leaders, Hengleap Sry and Savatey Ang, are championing urban environmental action in Phnom Penh by leading a specialized study tour for 15 youth at the historic Wat Phnom Daun Penh. This impactful initiative serves as the official launchpad for a broader environmental awareness campaign. The campaign officially kicks off on May 22, 2026, in celebration of International Biodiversity Day, while the practical, on-the-ground study tour takes place the following morning on Saturday, May 23, 2026, running for two intensive hours.
The study tour focuses on three critical pillars for the capital's future including: climate resilience, urban biodiversity, and expanding the city's green canopy.
Through this initiative, we aim to empower the next generation, fostering a deeper community connection to inspire long-term protection for Phnom Penh's invaluable natural environment.

Eastern Civilization Communication Project: Origins Exploration Action

International Youth Environmental Journalists Forum & Launch of the Green Information Integrity Initiative
This hybrid forum addresses a critical but overlooked dimension of the 2026 IDB theme "Acting locally for global impact": local biodiversity actions cannot achieve global influence without credible, verifiable information infrastructure. Two initiatives will be launched: (1) Youth Eco-Journalist Growth Program, training young reporters to cover biodiversity stories with verified data and digital verification skills under UNESCO MIL methodology; (2) Green Information Integrity Initiative, a commitment framework for media to combat environmental misinformation through fact-verification and source-attribution standards. Expansion of the protected area of a Sanctuary to include Coral Reefs
Colombia took a vital step for the conservation of the Caribbean Chocó and the Darién with the expansion of the Sanctuary of Wildlife and Flora in Acandí, Playón, Playona, including now San Francisco, and Cabo Tiburón. It is a protected area that is strategic for the preservation of sea turtles, coral reefs, mangroves, and other essential ecosystems located near the border between Colombia and Panama. The expansion adds almost 63,000 new hectares and allows the Sanctuary to now cover more than 89,000 hectares, from Cabo Tiburón, on the border with Panama, to the San Francisco area, south of the Gulf of Darién. The process responds to a long-standing demand from the local communities Councils Cocomanorte, Cocomaseco, and Cocomasur; and the Civil Society (Since 2008 Foundation ICRI Colombia, 2019 Mission Blue and 2023 International Coral Reef Observatory). The Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development has just signed in situ, the new resolution.

Activity Description:
On the occasion of the International Day for Biological Diversity 2026, students (3rd and 4rth grade, economics) will participate in an activity focused on raising awareness about the importance of nature conservation and biodiversity protection. BioUNIVERSITY Walk

Biodiversity on wheels: Raising awareness through urban transport
On the occasion of the International Day for Biological Diversity 2026, I created and will present to the citizens of Kalamata, in collaboration with ASTIKO KTEL Kalamatas the first urban bus in the world that “speaks” about biodiversity loss.
The bus was wrapped with the “Biodiversity stripes”, a visual representation of biodiversity decline from 1970 to 2020, created by Professor Miles Richardson. The colours gradually transition from green to grey, symbolising the loss of wildlife species and ecosystems over time. The initiative aimed to bring biodiversity awareness directly into citizens’ daily lives through public transport. The bus also displayed scientific information based on the Living Planet Index, highlighting the dramatic decline in global wildlife populations over the past 50 years. Through this moving awareness campaign, public transport became a powerful tool for environmental education and climate communication.

Do for the Birds! Do for Life!
To mark the International Day for Biological Diversity, we are significantly expanding the range of bird conservation measures available at the research station: we are installing waterers, setting up additional birdhouses, and enhancing the daily lives of our feathered friends with bird baths and dust baths. But we haven’t forgotten the smallest creatures either: we’re building insect hotels, bat houses, and butterfly waterers, and increasing the biodiversity of the habitat is also a key priority: we are introducing new species to the research station’s grounds, expanding the native plant population, and planting species that particularly support our pollinators—such as flowers that bloom at night.

Conservation, Preservation and Regeneration of Native Wild fruits
Native wild fruit plants are critical for preserving biodiversity, maintaining food security, and sustaining traditional knowledge (TK) systems. They carry genes that are more resistant to climate stressors, diseases, and pests than conventional commercial crops, highly nutrient-dense, containing rich amounts of vitamins, fiber, and antioxidants, serve as vital food sources for local wildlife, pollinators, and seed-dispersing birds and mammals and have the potential for value-addition and processing. To protect them three primary methods namely In-situ Conservation, Ex-situ Conservation, and Processing and Value addition are significant. The knowledge gain from our documentation of these important local species, we know some of them are reduced to few population. While those species which are abundant, are under-utilized due to the lack of processing and value-addition. We must bridge these gaps.

Safeguarding Himalayan Salamanders through Innovative Habitat Restoration
The Himalayan salamander (Tylototriton himalayanus) breeds in small seasonal wetlands (pokhris) between 1,000–3,000 m in the Darjeeling Hills. Less than 10% of known sites lie within protected areas. Our work involves collecting data on present habitat parameters (water quality, vegetation, threats). Based on these results, we are converting one private land parcel into a micro sanctuary – reviving ponds, removing invasive plants, and creating a functional breeding site. A single pond can be the difference between survival and extinction.

IDB at The Sarus Project, Dhanauri Wetlands
A birds and habitat conservation program titled "The Sarus Project" integrates community development with conservation begins in Dhanauri Wetlands, Greater Noida near Delhi, the capital of India. This wetland habitat is the breeding ground for Sarus Cranes - the tallest flying bird. The Sarus Project intends to empower the local communities living in three rural villages that surround the wetland, to become effective custodians of their habitat and its biodiversity. This empowerment will be in the form of education, public health and nutrition, water and sanitation, and livelihood generation, while programs protecting Sarus crane nests, ensuring quality of water, plastics-free environment, clearance of water hyacinth, etc. All of these activities will be hosted from a Sarus Wetland Centre. On 22nd, Solar lanterns will be distributed to girl students in the community, followed by bird walks in the weekend to commemorate the International Biodiversity Day.

Kerala’s Local Governments Driving Biodiversity – Towards India’s Most Biodiverse State by 2030
KSBB will hold a state level workshop in Thiruvananthapuram on 22 May 2026, after district workshops across Kerala’s 14 districts with Biodiversity Management Committees, NGOs, and local institutions to strengthen governance aligned with SDGs and climate goals. Thirty Local Self Governments from 1,200, representing coastal, midland, and highland regions, are selected for model conservation-restoration initiatives. The workshop will advance Local Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plans under KSBSAP 2025 2035. District teams will present biodiversity priorities, challenges, restoration, livelihoods, and sustainable actions. Participants include LSG leaders, communities, farmers, students, forest dependent groups, departments, and civil society, reinforcing Kerala’s vision of becoming India’s most biodiverse friendly state by 2030. KSBB will also conduct an online biodiversity quiz for students and the public from 22–28 May, with certificates for all and merit awards for winners.

In the foothills of North Bengal, ancient elephant migratory routes cut through tea gardens and fragmented forests, creating one of India’s most intense human elephant conflict zones. This event showcases our place-based conservation approach: extensive household surveys to map migration corridors and identify conflict hotspots, community biofencing as a non-lethal deterrence method, and coexistence frameworks centred on local communities. Restoring connectivity between protected areas reduces crop raids, property loss, and fatalities. True conservation builds a future where people and wildlife share the land safely.

Little Leaners at Muskaan ECCCs Protecting Sunderban Biodiversity
On 22 May 2026, SEED’s Muskaan Early Childhood Care Centres in Ghoramara and Sagar Islands will celebrate the International Day for Biological Diversity by introducing children aged 2–6 years to the rich natural world around them.
Located in the climate-vulnerable Sundarbans a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Ramsar Wetland; these islands are home to extraordinary biodiversity, including mangroves, birds, fish, dolphins, crocodiles, and the Royal Bengal Tiger. Yet rising sea levels, salinity intrusion, and climate change continue to threaten both the ecosystem and the communities living within it.
For the children growing up on these fragile islands, biodiversity is not just nature — it is life, protection, and survival.
The day will include nature walks, leaf art, storytelling on Sundarbans wildlife, seed planting, drawing activities, songs, rhymes, and discussions on “Our Island, Our Forest” to nurture curiosity, environmental awareness, and love for nature from an early age.

When did parasites first appear? Today, a truly diverse array of parasites inhabit the Earth, but it is not easy to imagine their ancient history. This is mainly because parasite fossils are extremely rare. However, evidence obtained from fossils of ancient marine organisms suggests that the phenomenon of \"parasitism\" has existed for more than 400 million years. This session will explore the long history and evolutionary biodiversity of parasites, complementing the ongoing special exhibition, \"Parasites and Symbiosis.\"

Acting Locally for Global Impact: Community-Led Biodiversity Restoration in Northern Kenya’s Rangelands
Event Description
This flagship event will showcase how community-driven initiatives in Kenya’s arid and semi-arid rangelands are delivering real solutions to biodiversity loss and climate change. Highlighting the successful UNCCD G20 GLI-funded Community-Led Land Restoration Project, the celebration will demonstrate how local pastoralist communities have restored over 78,000 hectares of degraded land through reforestation, sustainable grazing, water harvesting, and indigenous knowledge systems.
Participants will engage in interactive sessions featuring testimonies from elders, women beekeepers, youth mappers, and rangeland stewards whose lives have been transformed. The event will also display the power of inclusive approaches that empower women, youth, and indigenous groups in biodiversity conservation while improving livelihoods through beekeeping and climate-smart practices.

Traditional Knowledge Documentation Workshop 2026
This year’s Traditional Knowledge (TK) Seminar brought together 57 participants, representing 45 villages/longhouses and 18 ethnic groups from throughout Sarawak, Malaysia. It was a valuable platform for communities to hear updates on the TK Documentation Project and Research & Development (R&D) initiatives presented by Sarawak Biodiversity Centre officers.
Guest speakers from JF Agroforestry shared insights on modern vanilla cultivation techniques, as well as representatives from WWF Malaysia and Project Gelam, Setiu, Terengganu, who presented on the distillation process of essential oils from Gelam leaves (Melaleuca cajuputi).
Through TK Documentation Project, communities not only benefit from the preservation of traditional knowledge, technology transfer, and training organized by SBC, but also gain opportunities to generate income. This includes supplying raw materials and receiving royalties under the Indigenous Knowledge Benefit Sharing (IKBS) from product sales.

SBC Biodiversity Day 2026
SBC Biodiversity Day is an annual, free-admission public event hosted by the Sarawak Biodiversity Centre (SBC) in Kuching, Sarawak to celebrate the International Day for Biological Diversity. It raises public awareness about biodiversity through engaging science games, interactive lab explorations, and indigenous knowledge showcases. Organised since 2016, the event aligns to the themes of the international event yearly, and features milestones such as Benefit Sharing Agreements (BSA) signing. In 2026, SBC Biodiversity Day will feature the BSA renewal with three indigenous communities of Sarawak, on their Traditional Knowledge of the prized "Sekiu" oil, and its development.

Revaluing nature, from global agreements to local visions
A study on values associated with nature from a transformative change perspective; this first stage consists of a questionnaire distributed in collaboration with sivil Society groups, activists and youth to reach local communities and rural areas, and to integrate the perspectives of both the capital and the geographically isolated "Laguna" region.
The form collects photographs, poems and illustrations that arose in the inhabitants from some landscape, creature or element of local nature and later addresses their relationships and motifs surrounding this and other elements.The results will be made available digitally as a compendium of the works and findings.Related to these topics, they will be discussed in a conversation with four panelists: a member of CEPA-IAC (Aurora Gómez), a member of the Mexican delegation to COP 16 (Shanya Luna), and a researcher.In the conservation of biodiversity in local forests and a representative of a self-organized community with women circular economy

Advancing Global Biodiversity Conservation Through Smart Biotechnology

Community Action for Biodiversity and Climate Restoration 2026
The Wotowoto Forest Initiative will host a Biodiversity Day Environmental Programme at Wotowoto Forest, located between Ivori-Irri and Aviara communities in Isoko South Local Government Area, Delta State, Nigeria.
The programme is focused on biodiversity conservation, environmental restoration, climate awareness, and community-driven environmental action within the Niger Delta region.
Activities will include environmental awareness discussions, symbolic tree planting, youth engagement, and inspection of an ongoing 1 km canal restoration project extending from Isoko South toward Ndokwa East and connecting to the River Niger system.
The initiative has planted over 50,000 trees and continues to promote grassroots ecosystem restoration, sustainable environmental practices, and climate resilience within vulnerable communities.

Ms. Amina Zubaire, Snow Leopard Foundation Board Member, gave the welcome address, followed by a Markhor documentary screening. Expert remarks came from Mr. Naeem Ashraf Raja, Director Biodiversity, MoCC, and Dr. Syed Mehmood Nasir, former Inspector General Forestry. Prof. Dr. Shazia Iftikhar stressed protecting forests and green spaces, while Prof. Dr. Rohama Gil called biodiversity conservation a shared responsibility. Highlights included student poster presentations on biodiversity, Markhor and Snow Leopard conservation, global commitments, and wildlife protection. The program ended with certificates, souvenirs, a vote of thanks, and networking refreshments, reaffirming commitment to environmental sustainability in Pakistan.

National Seminar "Acting Locally for Global Impact"
Prioritizing native species, regulating invasive plants, improving nursery practices, and increasing public awareness can help ensure that greening efforts protect biodiversity rather than threaten it. Planting trees is an act of hope; planting the right trees is an act of wisdom. On, Pakistan’s plantation campaigns offer both hope and an important lesson. While tree planting is essential to combat climate change, pollution, and urban heat, experts warn that planting the wrong species can unintentionally harm local ecosystems. Research from Pakistan’s subtropical regions shows that many nurseries sell non-native plants introduced for landscaping and rapid growth. Though cities may appear greener, biodiversity can decline beneath the surface as native ecosystems weaken. Invasive plants may also consume excessive groundwater, damage agriculture, and become difficult to control. The solution is not to stop plantation drives, but to make them ecologically responsible.

Festival of Biodiversity 2026
The Festival of Biodiversity 2026, a joint venture of Peshawar Zoo & WWF Pakistan, is a celebration that is all about how beautiful nature is and how we need to protect plants, animals, and the earth. This festival wants to teach people, students, and young folks that we all have to work together to take care of the earth and all the different kinds of animals and plants that live here.
The festival will have many things to do. For example, there will be a nature art contest where students from different institutions will make paintings and artwork that show how pretty nature is. People who come to the festival will also get to go on nature walks and listen to talks about animal biodiversity and how we can help protect them and their habitats.
The festival is a way to get people to care more about nature and want to help take care of it. It does this by teaching people things, letting them be creative, and getting the community involved.

Salvando el Cortarrama Peruano en Piedritas

Launching and Declaration of the Apayao State College Rainforestation Area as an Institutional Wildlife Sanctuary and Protected Area
Apayao Province, part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, is rich in biodiversity. As a member institution, Apayao State College (ASC) supports biodiversity conservation, environmental stewardship, and sustainable resource management.
ASC maintains a rainforestation area of native and endemic species serving as a living laboratory for instruction, research, extension, and habitat restoration.

Marking the Trail, Protecting the Wild: Mt. Kulabog Biodiversity Day 2026
In celebration of the International Day for Biological Diversity 2026, the ZamboSur BioConservation Society will spearhead “Marking the Trail, Protecting the Wild: Mt. Coimbra Embraces Biodiversity
The Municipality of Coimbra and the Centre for Functional Ecology (CFE) of the University of Coimbra will mark the International Day for Biological Diversity on May 22 with a session focused on urban biodiversity and the presentation of projects related to sustainability and environmental conservation. “Communities for Conservation” is a community-based biodiversity awareness outreach initiative to be held in Burtinle District and surrounding settlements in Puntland, Somalia, in celebration of the International Day for Biological Diversity 2026. Andriesvale, located in Northern Cape close to the Kalahari desert, is a rural community of approximately 1,500 people it is the homeland of the Khoi San people. As it was official given to the Khoi San tribe in 1999 it does not fall under service provisioning of South Africa.
Residents who rely on agriculture and small-scale enterprises but in a very hash environment with little access to fertiliser, healthy soil and clean cooking
The village lacks reliable water and sanitation infrastructure, forcing residents to depend on contaminated borehole water and ponds shared with livestock. These unsafe water sources expose women and children to waterborne diseases.

The Spring of Mountain Life
As part of our ongoing workshop series in Nuwara Eliya, this session at Kikiliyamana College celebrates International Day for Biological Diversity with students aged 12–14 and their teachers. The workshop explores how global environmental challenges connect directly to the landscapes, ecosystems, and species around them, with a special focus on the ecological richness of Sri Lanka’s central highlands.
Through interactive drama, creative activities, and storytelling, participants will explore biodiversity, ecosystem services, and human impacts in engaging ways. The workshop also highlights the endemic and endangered Rhino-horned Lizard, a remarkable species found within their own montane landscape, helping students recognise that biodiversity is part of the life around them and worth protecting.
The second half of the day focuses on nature journaling and biodiversity photography, encouraging students and teachers to slow down, observe, and connect more deeply with local biodiversity.

As part of Biodiversity Day on 22 May, we are organizing a special live broadcast in which we will address biodiversity from different areas of expertise.
This year’s theme reminds us that biodiversity loss is a global crisis, but that solutions often begin at the local scale through knowledge, awareness, education, monitoring, conservation, and action.
In the panel, we will discuss biodiversity in the context of education, freshwater ecosystems, marine life, civil society initiatives, botany, herbaria, paleobiodiversity, and the global importance of Anatolia.

Green Homeland: My School, The Solution for the Future
We have given a strong response to the United Nations' call for "Local Action for Global Impact" this year, from the Koramaz Valley, one of the most valuable natural and cultural heritage sites in our geography and a UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List site.
In our field work, we went beyond passive observation with our gifted students.
In line with our BİLSEM Support Education 7th Theme objectives, we focused on the biodiversity and ecosystem structure of the valley. Our students recorded local and endemic species using digital tools, both conducting data collection processes themselves and experiencing a real "Citizen Science" experience.
Our children, blending their research identities with an aesthetic perspective, immortalized the unique details of the ecosystem through their own lenses. By transforming the scientific data they collected into art, they captured invaluable and original images for the TÜBİTAK Science Youth Biodiversity Photography Competition.

Before conservation had a name
The campaign positions the Buganda clan totem system as the world's oldest community conservation movement one that protected biodiversity centuries before the word "conservation" even existed. It reframes indigenous cultural knowledge not as tradition for tradition's sake, but as cutting-edge ecological wisdom that modern science is only now catching up to.

Walk for Peace
Our Walk for Peace is an Ecumenical Walk starting from Farm St Church at 10am and heading to Westminster Cathedral where we will pause for prayers in the Piazza before heading on to Southwark Cathedral. Here we will join in the Mass with Canon Michael Branch at 12.30pm.

CIEDM Actions for Bees & Biodiversity @ Arcadia Ecohome Microforest
We nature lovers and grassroots at CIEDM are holding a local event to support and take part in three national and global awareness campaigns in following four consecutive days and all for nature conservation to protect species, habitats and ecosystems: World Bee Day and Reduce Your Lawn Day on May 20, Outdoor Classroom Day on May 21, and International Day for Biological Diversity on May 22. Our actions at the Arcadia Ecohome Microforest, a Certified Wildlife Habitat, Certified Pollinator Garden and Certified Bee Friendly Farm with 500+ flowering trees and uncountable ground covers and tall grasses, include rewilding landscapes, restoring the forest ecosystems for wild bees, enhancing soil biodiversity with organic waste from tree trimming, and engaging a bioblitz walk in the woods and a social media campaign to raise awareness of those four campaigns ad what we are doing at the pocket forest.

JHS '27 Adopt-a-Spot Cleanup
The class of 2027 at JHS is sponsoring a cleanup after school on Friday, May 22nd at their County Adopt-a-Spot near the school. All students are welcome! The group will walk with a chaperone to the Adopt-a-Spot location via the interpretive trail behind school. They will collect any trash along the trail and around the Adopt-a-Spot.

"Clean Forest, Clean River - Healthy Future! Local Actions."
Event Program: "Clean Forest, Clean River - Healthy Future! Local Actions for Global Impact." Lecture on the harm of illegal dumping to human health and the national park ecosystem.
- Announce a drawing contest about the harm of litter to nature and humans. Post submitted entries on the national park's Instagram page (from May 20 to June 5). Award the most voted entries on June 5 (for elementary school students).
- Distribute bags and gloves after the lecture, and then head to the illegal dump site on the border with the national park. Schoolchildren collect litter along the way (for high school students).
- Cleanup of the illegal dump by local residents and park rangers using the park's tractor.
- Set up a sign at the site of the former illegal dump.
- Transport the litter on the park's tractor to the official landfill in the Bulungursky District, along with a park employee.
