The Biodiversity Conservation Office of Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP) organized various publicity events through radio, internet, newspaper and message on the theme of this year’s International Day for Biological Diversity in May 2008.
1. Training program on the biodiversity conservation and other activities
The Biodiversity Conservation Office of MEP invited 5 well-known experts in China to provide training to reporters of major news media in Beijing and principals of student unions from universities. Around 20 reporters and 6 student representatives participated in the training program. The experts delivered excellent speeches on biodiversity conservation and related global hot spots. In conjunction with the training, the major media publicized biodiversity with more than 50 reports published, which included CCTV2, People’s Daily, Science and Technology Daily, Farmers’ Daily,
Xinhuanet.com and
China.com.cn.
On May 22, the Biodiversity Conservation Office and China.com.cn jointly conducted online live broadcasting in commemoration of International Day for Biological Diversity. They invited Mr. Zhang Runzhi, Researcher and tutor of doctoral gradate students from Institute of Zoology, CAS, to give explanations on biodiversity and interact with netizen online. Furthermore, an exhibition of digital photography on the biodiversity conservation and sustainable use was also held on the same day.
The State Intellectual Property Office organized promotion by publishing 5 articles, explaining, from varied perspectives, patent application in areas concerning development and utilization of genetic resources and biodiversity conservation as well as the development trend of related technologies. On May 22, the State Intellectual Property Office also organized a training program on intellectual property of genetic resources and traditional knowledge.
2. Local Promotion Activities on Biodiversity Conservation
Beijing, Yunnan, Jiangsu and other provinces also organized related promotion activities.
Beijing launched the 11th Science Popularization Month on biodiversity conservation. This month-long activity started from April 19 till May 23 involving 18 districts and counties and major parks, featuring over 100 rich and diverse popular science activities. This event centered on the theme of “Biodiversity conservation, my action for a Green Olympics”. It disseminated knowledge on biodiversity in an all-round way, promoted awareness in biodiversity conservation and the idea that to conserve biodiversity is to protect our own home garden, with a view to drawing people’s attention to biodiversity conservation.
Yunnan Province held a discussion to mark the International Day for Biological Diversity to implement the guidance of provincial government on biodiversity conservation of southwest Yunnan. During the discussion participants listened to the advice of experts and talked freely on how to play the role of environmental protection department in biodiversity conservation and contributed to biodiversity conservation in Yunnan Province by making suggestions on protective measures. The province also held a lecture on “Colorful Yunnan • Conservation and Utilization of Biodiversity” where experts were invited to make reports on protection and utilization of Yunnan’s germplasm resources and agriculture to give thorough explanations on this year’s theme.
Xinhua Daily of Jiangsu Province opened a special page to promote genetic resource protection and conservation culture. Local communications companies such as China Mobile, China Unicom, CNC and Tietong, sent to 10 million subscribers public service messages which went this way “Today is International Biodiversity Day. Protect genetic resources and advance conservation culture”. Green Report, a program of Jiangsu Education Television Station, also broadcasted an interview with experts on biodiversity. On the same day Zhongshan Botanical Garden opened freely to the public with a banner stretched promoting the knowledge and significance of biodiversity conservation.
3. Issuance of Stamps on International Biodiversity Day
To commemorate the International Day for Biological Diversity on May 22, 2008 and celebrate the 9th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties of the Convention on Biodiversity, Ministry of Environmental Protection and China Post Printing Co. jointly issued a set of commemorative stamps before May 22. Altogether 500 sets were printed. The stamps were sent to the Secretariat of Convention on Biological Diversity and member organizations of the Coordination Team for the Convention Implementation and were well received.
4. Public Service Advertisement
A public service advertisement on biodiversity conservation and promoting conservation culture was produced in cooperation with China Mass Media International Advertising Corp. The advertisement was broadcasted on CCTV 2 from May 22 to May 25 and from June 2 to June 8. During the period between May 26 and June 22, 45 local television stations also broadcasted the advertisement. This helped to raise public awareness in biodiversity conservation and bring the attention of the society to the biodiversity conservation.
围绕今年的主题，环境保护部生物多样性保护办公室在5月22日期间利用电台、报纸、网络、短信等开展了一系列形式多样的宣传活动。
一、 召开生物多样性保护知识培训班等活动
环境保护部生物多样性保护办公室邀请5位国内知名生物多样性保护专家在北京香山植物园对在京主流新闻媒体记者和高校学生会负责人进行培训，到会媒体记者约20人，到会高校学生代表6人。专家们分别就目前生物多样性保护及与其相关的全球热点问题进行了精彩的演讲。结合培训班，组织主流媒体对生物多样性进行宣传。共刊发报道50多篇。包括中央电视台二套、人民日报、科技日报、农民日报、新华网、中国网等主流媒体。5月22日当天与中国网联合开展纪念国际生物多样性日网上视频直播，邀请中国科学院动物研究所研究员、博士生导师张润志对生物多样性知识进行讲解，并且与在线网民互动交流。另外，5月22日举办了生物多样性保护与持续利用数码摄影大赛作品展。
国家知识产权局利用生物多样性信息节点开展了宣传，撰写了5篇稿件，从不同角度介绍了同生物遗传资源的开发利用、生物多样性保护相关的技术领域内的专利申请情况以及技术的发展趋势，并于5月22日举办了“生物遗传资源和传统知识的知识产权培训研讨班”。
二、各地开展生物多样性日宣传活动
各地如北京、云南、江苏等省市也开展了相应的宣传纪念活动。
北京市开展了第十一届北京市生物多样性保护科普宣传月活动，本次科普活动为期一个月，从4月19日至5月23日，活动涉及全市18个区县、各大公园,共举办了百余项形式各异、丰富多彩的科普活动。宣传月以：“保护生物多样性 绿色奥运我行动”为主题，全方位、多层次向公众普及生物多样性知识，提高生物多样性保护意识，以及保护生物多样性就是保护我们自己的家园的理念，动员全社会共同关心生物多样性保护。
云南省召开了“纪念5.22国际生物多样性日”、落实省政府滇西北生物多样性保护工作会议精神座谈会，听取专家学者的意见建议，畅谈环保部门在生物多样性保护工作中如何发挥环保部门职能作用及保护的措施建议，为云南省生物多样性保护建言献策；举办“七彩云南•生物多样性保护与利用”专题讲座，邀请专家作“云南作物种子资源的保存与利用”、“生物多样性与农业”等报告对今年的主题进行了深入的阐述和讲解。
江苏省在当日的《新华日报》用专版形式开展“保护生物物种资源，推进生态文明建设”的主题宣传；并通过当地移动、联通、网通、铁通等通讯公司，向1000万用户发送了“今天是国际生物多样性日。保护生物物种资源，推进生态文明建设”的社会公益短信；江苏省教育电视台《绿色报告》栏目还播出了以保护生物多样性为主题的专家访谈节目；当日中山植物园免费开放，园内悬挂宣传保护生物多样性的宣传横幅，向游人介绍生物多样性知识及其意义。
三、发行国际生物多样性日纪念邮票
为纪念2008年5.22国际生物多样性日，庆祝第九次缔约方大会召开，环境保护部与中国邮政印刷总公司于5月22日前联合发行一套纪念邮票。共印制500套，邮票发给生物多样性公约秘书处、中国履行《生物多样性公约》工作协调组成员单位等，获得一致好评。
四、制作播出生物多样性保护公益广告
与央视广而告之公司合作，制作一条“保护生物多样性、共创生态文明”的公益广告，在中央二套播出。播出时间为5月22日－25日，6月2日－8日。此外5月26日至6月22日期间，有45家地方电视台同时播出该片。公益广告的播出强化了公众对生物多样性的保护意识，提高了全社会对生物多样性保护的关注程度。
