Side Event

Information sharing on the adoption of measures by Parties as users of genetic resources in order to meet their obligations under the Nagoya Protocol on ABS

Organizer
Ministry of the Environment of Japan (MOE-J) in collaboration with the Secretariat of the CBD and European Union

Date and Time
12 October 2012 13:15 - 14:45

Meeting
Eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 11)

The Nagoya Protocol on ABS leaves considerable discretion to the Parties in determining the types of measures to adopt to fulfill their obligations. A number of countries are currently spending substantial time on the consideration of appropriate domestic measures in order to ratify and implement the Protocol and also more specifically to fulfill their obligations as users of genetic resources. Following “the international symposium on domestic measures to implement the obligations under the Nagoya Protocol” held in Tokyo in March, at this event, government officials and experts from countries which are primarily users of genetic resources, which either have domestic measures in place responding to the Protocol or have made progress in considering the establishment of such user type measures, will be invited to present the outlines of these measures or those still under consideration. They will also introduce their plans and challenges in order to ensure the effectiveness of these measures. In addition to these presentations, the side-event will provide an opportunity for participants to exchange relevant information and views on this topic. The purpose of this event is to facilitate the exchange of information regarding the development of national/regional measures by Parties as users of genetic resources, in order to contribute to the early entry into force and implementation of the Protocol.
