Organizer
BirdLife International

Date and Time
15 October 2012 13:15 - 14:45

Meeting
Eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 11)

This side event aims to further the discussions on the role of the private sector in biodiversity conservation from CoP 10 to CoP 11. It will bring together Japanese corporations with Indian and international corporations to share the experiences. Presentations will include those from leading Indian and Japanese corporations on the conservation and sustainable use of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (BES). We hope that there will be meaningful discussions on the important role of the private sector in securing progress in biodiversity management as well. In the 8th Ordinary Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP8; in 2006, Curitiba, Brazil), it was decided to promote the engagement of the private sector in the implementation of the Convention. In the run up to the 10th Conference of Parties to be hosted by Japan, the Ministry of Environment of Japan issued guidelines for corporations on biodiversity conservation. Previous to this development, the Japanese Business Initiative for Biodiversity (JBIB) was set up in 2008 originally by some private corporations in Japan with the objective of promoting business practices for biodiversity through methods such as evaluation of ecosystem services. Keidanren Nature Conservation Fund which was established after the 1972 Stockholm Conference hosted a business and biodiversity forum alongside the CBD COP 10 with BirdLife International providing one of the inputs from the International NGO sector. From the hosting country, the lead organizer will be the Bombay Natural History Society, BirdLife Partner in India together with its corporate partners. From Japan, InterRisk, Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Group will take the lead in behalf of the Japan Biodiversity Initiative. BirdLife International’s Asia Secretariat will provide co-ordination support.
